FMC named one of the Top 35 Best Employers for New Canadians 2010

Award stems from firm’s Legal Professional Internship and its commitment to TRIEC’s Mentoring Partnership Program

Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP (FMC) is proud to announce that it has been honoured, for the second consecutive year, as one of the Top 35 Best Employers for New Canadians 2010.

Mediacorp Canada Inc., a Toronto-based publisher of employment-related periodicals, chose the Top 35 employers based on their development of initiatives to assist newcomers to Canada. FMC was recognized for its leadership role in providing programs such as internal coaching and mentoring to assist newcomers to Canada and reduce employment barriers, as well as the firm’s ongoing training in cross-cultural issues and inclusiveness.

As the first law firm to serve as a corporate partner of the Toronto Region Immigrant Employment Council (TRIEC)’s Mentoring Partnership program, FMC has more than 20 members currently participating in the program, pairing skilled immigrants with established Canadian professionals in a mentoring relationship. This mentorship program is designed to break down the barriers immigrants face when trying to enter the Canadian labour market. To date, several FMC mentees have obtained employment with the assistance of our mentors through TRIEC’s Mentoring Partnership Program. FMC’s participation in the Mentoring Partnership builds on the firm’s diversity initiatives, formalized in 2006 to ensure that FMC’s national workforce truly represents the rich diversity of the local communities in which FMC practises.

In 2008, FMC established its Legal Professional Internship, an innovative six-month paid internship that provides an internationally trained professional with practical hands-on experience in a broad-based Canadian law firm. It introduces them to Canadian culture and simultaneously gives them the valuable knowledge, skills and experience to allow them to successfully transition to a professional career in Canada.

In March 2010, FMC was honoured by TRIEC with the CBC Toronto Vision Award for Immigrant Inclusion, one of its Immigrant Success (IS) Awards, acknowledging the firm’s leadership and innovation in recruiting and retaining skilled immigrants. Presented to an employer who has implemented a unique, groundbreaking initiative that helps integrate skilled immigrants into the workplace, FMC receives this award in recognition of its Legal Professional Internship, the first program of its kind in the country.

Amrit Soar, the first legal intern to pass through FMC’s program, gained tremendous experience during the course of her internship. Prior to immigrating to Toronto in April 2007, Amrit earned a Bachelor of Laws Degree from the University of Nairobi, Kenya. She has over 20 years’ experience in the legal profession, 10 of which were as a partner and department head in a law firm in Nairobi. “I am indebted to [Fraser Milner Casgrain] for giving me excellent experience in key areas of Canadian law, exposure to and participation in the firm’s professional and personal development programs, networking opportunities and valuable insight into the legal environment in Canada,” says Amrit. “Thanks to the internship at the firm I feel confident that I will find a job in the legal field and become a lawyer again in Canada.”
